Does the char layer on Shou Sugi Ban Timber vary?

While Mortlock Timber offers the most consistent charred timber on the market, you should still expect to see varying levels of charring on the boards’ surface due to a few factors.

  1. As timber is a natural product, the hardness of each piece of timber varies.
  2. Mortlock Timber uses a charring machine that moves the timber through the machine at a consistent pace.
  3. Generally, the harder the timber, the longer it takes to char.

Because of this, you can expect to see varying levels of char layer with Shou Sugi Ban cladding. Below are some example images of what level of variation you should expect to see.
