About The Project

With outstanding ocean views, this beachside residence included our Shou Sugi Ban Charred Spotted Gum Cladding.

The species of timber used on this project was spotted gum. This native Australian hardwood harmonises exceptionally well with the charring process. The 120x18mm timber pieces on this home provide two benefits. One is the BAL 29 rating that spotted gum provides. Two is that the distinctive grain patterns this natural timber offer. Both were considered for this project. This Trendplank installation was pre-finished. If the desired outcome was to retain the Shou Sugi Ban finish and not let it weather off, it would require one coat after installation, a third coat around two years following the second coat.

Spotted gum, revered for its durability and distinctive grain patterns, harmonises exceptionally well with the charring process, creating a striking visual impact. Due to its naturally high fire-resistant properties, charred spotted gum battens and cladding are often used in bushfire zones where BAL 29 is required.
