Why Timber Texture Matters

Key take aways

Texture influences how timber interacts with light, how the grain is expressed, how coatings appear and how the material is experienced.
When specifying timber, surface texture should be considered alongside species, profile and finish to achieve the desired aesthetic and performance outcome.
Some finishes perform differently depending on the timber texture. For example, Sioo:X requires a brushed surface, while EnviroClear is best suited to smooth textures such as dressed timber.
Dressed, Fine sawn, Brushed, Circular sawn and Rough sawn finishes each create unique visual outcomes.
Different coating systems have different texture requirements and compatibility considerations.

When specifying timber for a project, factors such as timber species, profile and coatings are often carefully considered during the design phase. However, one detail that has significant impact on the final outcome is the timbers texture.

Texture influences how timber interacts with light, how the grain is expressed, how coatings perform and how the timber is experienced within a space.

Imagine a contemporary living room with a smooth timber feature that feels refined, clean and precise. Now imagine that same space with a more textured timber surface, where deeper grooves catch the light, create shadow within the grain and add a stronger sense of depth and character. The timber may be the same species, but the texture can completely change the architectural outcome.

Texture drastically changes the experience of timber, amplifying a unique dynamic that can dramatically alter the character of a project. Understanding the role of timber texture allows designers to reach a more intentional material outcome and aligns the finalised result with a broader design vision. From smooth dressed finishes to brushed, fine sawn, circular sawn and rough sawn textures, each manufacturing process creates a unique visual and tactile experience. Understanding these differences can help architects and designers select a finish that aligns with their design intent and project requirements.

What is Timber Texture?

When discussing texture, we first have to make sure we understand what it is that we are talking about and that is texture isn’t completely dependant on a timber species or coating. In this case, timber texture refers to the surface finish applied to the timber after machining and processing. While two boards may be the same species and profile, their appearance can differ significantly depending on whether they feature a dressed, brushed or sawn texture.

Surprisingly, texture options aren’t just an aesthetic choice either, each texture creates a different visual and tactile experience whilst also influencing how the timber responds to coatings, weathering and daily use.

How Texture Influences Appearance

One of the most visually noticeable effects of timber texture is the way it interacts in light.

On one hand, smooth dressed timber reflects light evenly across its face, often creating a cleaner and more refined timber appearance whereas a more textured finish such as rough sawn, brushed or circular sawn surfaces create depth and shadow, helping to emphasise the natural character of the timber.

This can be particularly important across large wall or ceiling applications where texture becomes a defining architectural feature.

How Texture Options Change Grain Definition

When deciding on a texture for your timber, it’s good to understand that different textures reveal the timbers grain in different ways. For projects showcasing the natural qualities of timber, texture can be just as influential as the species selection or coating.

At Mortlock Timber, we offer a range of texture options including dressed, fine sawn, brushed, circular sawn and rough sawn finishes. These textures are applied in-house, allowing us to maintain quality and consistency across our timber profiles and species. Each texture offers its own unique visual and tactile qualities, making it possible to tailor the appearance of the timber to suite everything from ceiling applications through the highly expressive façades and feature walls.

Timber Texture and Weathering

As timber ages, changes within the visual aesthetic matures and has to be maintained. Texture can influence how timber ages over time, making texture a considered design element for long-term performance.

Although there is no universal ‘best’ timber texture option, textured surfaces can often help disguise minor surface movement, marks and weathering – making certain textures popular consideration for exterior applications. Textured finishes such as rough sawn, brushed and circular sawn timber can continue to develop character as they age, while maintaining a consistent visual appearance across larger surface areas.

Mortlock Timber Texture Options

Dressed Timber

Our dressed timber texture provides a smooth and refined surface finish with minimal surface variance. The timber face is planed to create a clean, consistent appearance and is often specified for modern interiors, ceilings and joinery applications where a clean and muted textural appearance is desired. While the texture is subtle, dressed timber still showcases the character of the species through its grain pattern and variation.

Benefits

  • Smooth, uniform finish
  • Refined architectural appearance
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Highlights natural timber colour variation and grain pattern

Finish Compatibility

  • Aqua2k Recommended
  • Enviro Clear Recommended
  • Cutek CD50 Recommended
  • Controlled Erosion Stain Suitable where a weathered aesthetic is desired
  • SiOO:X Not Available for dressed timber

Brushed Timber

Brushed timber enhances the natural grain by removing the softer fibres from the timbers surface through a wire brushing process. This process reveals the dense timber grain beneath the surface and carves deep textural grooves along the timbers face, creating a textured finish that accentuates the species character. The result is a tactile finish with increased depth and character that works particularly well with Cutek CD50, WOCA & SiOO:X coatings and timber finishes.

Benefits

  • Enhanced grain definition
  • Increased visual depth
  • Tactile surface texture
  • Increased timber coating adhesion

Finish Compatibility

  • Aqua2k Highly recommended
  • Enviro Clear Not available for brushed timber
  • Cutek CD50 Highly recommended
  • Controlled Erosion Stain Suitable where a weathered aesthetic is desired
  • Sioo:X Highly recommended

Fine Sawn Timber

Offering a subtle texture that sits between dressed and rough sawn, our fine sawn texture retains a natural appearance while maintaining a contemporary architectural feel through subtle linear markings across the face of the board. These markings introduce visual depth and produce a more natural appearance when compared to dressed timber and is often described as the middle ground between smooth and heavily textured finishes.

Benefits

  • Subtle sawn appearance
  • Reduced surface glare
  • Balanced contemporary appearance
  • Suitable for both interior and exterior applications

Finish Compatibility

  • Aqua2k Recommended
  • Enviro Clear Recommended
  • Cutek CD50 Recommended
  • Controlled Erosion Stain Suitable where a weathered aesthetic is desired
  • Sioo:X Not Available

Circular Sawn

Our circular sawn texture features visible blade markings that create a distinctive textured finish. Often specified for feature applications, our circular sawn texture introduces a rustic character, movement and visual interest to the timbers surface.

Benefits

  • Strong architectural character
  • Distinctive textured appearance
  • Increased showdown and depth
  • Ideal for feature applications

Finish Compatibility

  • Aqua2k Recommended
  • Enviro Clear Not available
  • Cutek CD50 Highly recommended

  • Sioo:X Not available

Rough Sawn Timber

Rough sawn timber retains its original sawn surface from the saw mill, this creates a highly textured and rustic finish rather than machining the timber to a smooth finish. This texture features pronounced grain, bur and ridges that highlight the timbers raw and authentic qualities. Rough sawn finish is commonly specified for external applications creating a rich and highly expressive architectural surface.

Benefits

  • Strong Natural character
  • Reduced reflectivity
  • Enhanced grain visibility
  • Suitable for external architectural applications

Selecting the Right Texture

With all that said, selecting the ideal timber texture mostly depends on the overall design intent of the project. A smooth dressed finish may suit a refined interior environment, while a rough sawn or brushed texture may better complement a façade designed to celebrate natural materiality and weathering. There are some cases where a particular texture is required due to the performance of a timber finish or coating. A couple of examples would be that is it required to have a brushed face finish when using Sioo:X Weather protection or requiring a dressed timber texture when using Enviro Clear. With that said, our project consultants have a keen eye and many years of experience helping clients choose what finish, timber species and texture to specify for projects – we make sure to provide maximum performance of your timber and align our products compatibility with your timber projects!

Texture is More Than a Finish

Often overlooked as a finishing detail, timber texture has a significant influence on the way a project looks, feels and performs. From refined interiors spaces to highly textured external façades, the intentional selection of a timber texture has an important impact on the final architectural expression and performance.

At Mortlock Timber, we are happy to help you navigate our range of timber texture options across our timber species and profiles. We look at your desired outcomes and aim to hit a target that aligns with both your aesthetic and performance objectives for the project.

FAQS

What is timber texture?

Timber texture refers to the surface finish of the timber, created through manufacturing processes such as dressing, brushing or sawing. Different textures influence how the timber looks, feels and interacts with light, coatings and weathering.

Why is timber texture important?

Timber texture affects the visual appearance, grain definition, coating performance and tactile experience of the timber. Selecting the right texture can be just as important as choosing the timber species, profile or coating system.
