About The Project
Designed by Alcorn Middleton Architects for Brisbane City Council Bradbury Park Playscape redefines the role of playgrounds as active public infrastructure. The project transforms a traditional park into a dynamic and immersive environment that encourages exploration, social interaction and risk-based play for a broad range of users, with a particular focus on older children and teenagers.
The project features 85 x 20 & 130 x 20 Jarrah dressed boards with pencil round edges and back, manufactured with a Shou Sugi Ban finish. Supplied pre-coated in WOCA Black, the charred timber was selected for its durability, low maintenance requirements and ability to integrate with the surrounding landscape. The deep, consistent tone reinforced the architectural form while referencing the natural character of native hardwoods.
The use of end-matched boards in random lengths allows for efficient installation and a continuous visual outcome. Central to the design is a sculptural playscape inspired by the concept of the ‘Biological City’, where built form and natural systems interact. The structure provides a series of interconnected pathways, elevated elements and sheltered spaces, creating a layered experience that invites movement and discovery.
Recognised for its innovation and community impact, Bradbury Park Playscape has received multiple architectural awards, setting a new benchmark for contemporary playground design in Australia.
