American Oak TImber
The two most common types of this hardwood timber are American White Oak and American Red Oak. Both grow in the eastern part of the United States and are similar in appearance. The main difference is that American Red Oak has slightly smaller rays and therefore a less pronounced figure compared to American White Oak. At Mortlock Timber, we use American White Oak because of its prominent grain pattern and stunning look when used for interiors.
The timber has an extremely attractive finish when polished, making it perfect for interior features such as flooring, panelling, battens, and staircases.
Benefits of using american oak timber
American Oak is relatively easy to work with, and for this reason, it’s often used for making furniture. The timber is easy to machine, nail, screw, and glue, and can be stained and polished to achieve beautiful finishes. This makes it ideal for flooring, cladding, and panelling interiors to achieve a sleek modern look. American White Oak is readily available in Australia and comes in a wide range of finishes.

This beautiful hardwood ranges from pale yellow-brown to mid-brown, sometimes with a pink tinge. People often believe that certain colours are only available with American Red Oak, but in reality, the timber has the same colour variations as American White Oak. The tree’s name actually derives from its red foliage and not the timber’s colour.
Natural features found in this timber species include veins, knots, and prominent grains which make American Oak flooring, cladding, and battens a pleasure to the eye.
What grades does mortlock supply?
Mortlock Timber grades our American Oak products to standard and better grade, also known as natural select grade, in accordance with Australian Standards (AS) 2796.2-2006. The standard and better grade lets the timber show its natural textures and characteristics without compromising on consistency and quality. If you require American Oak cladding, battens in another grade, speak to our team about what’s possible.
