About The Project
Designed by Alex Urena Design Studio, Rann St project is a contemporary home that celebrates clean geometry, thorough detailing and the expressive beauty of natural materials. The architectural intent was to create a calm, refined living environment where each element works together to form a cohesive visual story.
The exterior is finished in TRENDPLANK 120×19 Shou Sugi Ban Burnt Ash Cladding. Pre-oiled in Cutek Black Ash, end matched and manufactured in set lengths for a uniform installation. The charred surface gives the home a deep, textured appearance that shifts elegantly with the light. Burnt Ash timber was selected for its stability, rich grain and ability to hold a deep char finish, resulting in a façade that feels both moderns and grounded.
Alex Urena Design Studio’s approach focuses on creating spaces that feel effortless and intuitive. The dark timber cladding frames the building’s form while creating a strong contrast against the surrounding landscape and interior materials.
Rann St was awarded the 2025 TIDA Australia Designer New Home of the Year, a recognition that celebrates exceptional design and industry leading craftsmanship. The judges commended the projects refined spatial planning, elegant material palette and strong architectural identity. This award reinforces the value of high performance timber products in modern residential design and showcases how thoughtful material selection can elevate a project from impressive to award winning.
