CHARRED TIMBER CLADDING01 August 2018
It has been a great experience for the team here at Mortlock Timber Group developing a way of delivering this fabulous Shou Sugi Ban finish in house! Shou-Sugi-Ban is a Traditional Japanese method of charring timber; "The process forms a carbon layer on the exterior of the boards which protects the timber inside and is said to render the wood nearly maintenance free".
We have often been asked if we have recommendations or options that will allow clients to achieve a dark/ black finish to natural timber cladding and whilst the option of staining timber black is always going to be there the ideal outcome for clients was to have an option that did not require regular staining. After much research and analysing our customers pain points with black cladding it became acutely apparent that we had to develop a controlled inhouse method of charring, which we have achieved! Knowing there was a current demand for someone to offer this finish across multiple timbers we knew from the start the product development would be a success. It has been taken up by leading architects, designers and builders right across Australia and beyond.
